with the third release on manhigh, new altitudes are achieved by recruiting one of techno’s rising stars. best known for his work on dekmantel and ghostly international, since 2012 charles duff has attracted increasing attention for his personal and unique take on techno. originally from san francisco but now based in berlin, following his shift in locale his sound has moved on towards a more european sensibility, a mode in full display on his deep mind ep for manhigh.

james dexters star has been rising for a while now - the young brit turning out killer tracks regularly on the back of hugely well received dj sets. on his second outing for dessous recordings, dexter does what he does best - four slices of deep, funky and vibing house music for the floor. lead track drift is typical of dexters flair for subtle, edgy sounds, wrapped inside a warm and inviting groove. elements come and go, but the shuffling, infection feel runs throughout. take me is a more upfront vibe with a seriously bumping groove - dexter clearly well versed in the roots of house music from chicago. ‘whose rules ?’ is a snappy, bright and lively production, with a sub bass that will troubler some of the world’s best club systems in the coming months. the light, jazzy vocals offsets the groove perfectly - sure to be a big tune for a wide variety of djs. the last track of the release is disco deep - and it pretty much does exactly what it says - a swung, groovy feel punctuated by disco claps and balearic flourishes that will sound as good on the beach as in the basement.

after reviving his 16-bit soul with rampantly joyful and excessively hedonistic escapades in new york, the now newly-named sonikku (casting off the dj moniker of old and focussing purely on his namesake) takes refuge in the legendary high altitude temple, rising from the forest through the clouds and to a monumental blue-hued floating structure. sky sanctuary.

as much as, in modern days, it has become increasingly difficult to pin things down to a specific genre this release brings very defined genres but also a refreshing feature, a constant change of energy in one single track, and most importantly, it all comes with this modern feel to it which indicates it is the new generation rising making justice to what ultrastretch stands for, surfacing fresh and new talents. signed by austrian duo foehn & jerome. the a side is of the ep consists of the genius idea that it is a relatively simple track, however, with the feel that so much is happening, the type when you listen to a loop but one you can listen to forever and not get tired of it, always the best sign. a rolling and constant bassline makes it into a super fat and rounded dancefloor groover, while on top you have these fragments of chopped up vocal samples in and out creating a sense of confusion, a mind drilling element is then complemented by very loose and fine hihats floating around. on the b side starts with quirky minimal track with a galloping kick throughout, when the open hihats slam in with a vocal it quickly develops into a very happy and playful housy vibe and just when you are riding, the clap slams in now on a tighter hat sequence followed by the break and rebuilding, when it comes back however it adds another element changing the energy yet again, through introducing a synthline. the quirky frog sounding noises throughout certainly makes it a super witty track overall.

into the light brings out a splendid assemblage of 17 tracks of mostly previously unheard material by athens based composer akis daoutis (akis) most of them recorded in his hometown and in usa where he was studying in the mid-eighties.

burgeoning dj and producer bontan makes his debut on the notorious hot creations label. hotly anticipated, the release features two original cuts to fuel his rising profile. uk based bontan has been using title track the first time as his secret weapon for the last six months and is now finally unleashing it. “i’ve been testing it and tweaking it play by play!’ he explains. ‘the vocal compliments the rolling bass melody and gives it a darker edge”. this a producer who fully understands how to create a track for a heaving dancefloor. personal question is the second cut and flips the mood entirely with a twisted vocal entwined in beeps and percussion, whilst stirring the sentiments of lost early hours. a firm favourite in the underground scene, he has built a solid reputation with releases on circus recordings, 20/20 vision, and cajual among others.

after debuting on mr. gs phoenix g imprint in 2016 with the unfamiliar territory ep, jayson wynters makes an appearance on dba for this, his second release, backed by a kowton remix. jayson wynters is a dj that is able to combine many genres in one set and make it work. wynters was first known as a garage mc in birmingham, before rising to prominence in the city s underground radio and club scene, where he showcased an impressive knowledge of rare groove and house music. as he got older his taste for music began to mature, his collection began to grow, and he soon began to dj. using music as an outlet for expression, whether in the form of djing or having fun on some drum machines and synths, is one of the most defining features to wynters. he continues to fuel his passion by keeping an eye on the future rather than the past and striving to remain different.

review ornate music continues in its mission to reach out to the freshest talent in the house and techno scene by shining a light on emergent german talent faune, following last years stellar releases by ka one & st-sene and homepark. thus far, jakob panthels production as faune has been spotted on the soundscape versions label, while under his own name he has produced two albums released digitally on crystalline days. most recently, he delivered the four-track isvatten ep to tuesday slump, which operates out of his native munich. as well as his rising release schedule, he has been appearing frequently on the circuit in munich and berlin, performing alongside the likes of a made up sound, stefan jòs and skudge. on this ep panthel delivers three tracks of deep, hardware-powered techno with a keen dancefloor instinct, fitting right in to the ethos of ornate and marking another step forward for faune.

black truffle presents people pleaser, the new lp from nantes-based drummer and percussionist will guthrie. initially rising to prominence in australia as a drummer in the fields of jazz and improvised music, guthrie later turned increasingly toward electronics and amplified percussion, developing an idiosyncratic style of electro-acoustic performance characterized by shimmering metallic textures, rapid-fire textural transformations and aggressively high volume. recent years have seen a return to the drum kit in both solo and collaborative work, in performances where guthrie uses duration and endurance to push at the limits of his formidable technical abilities as a player in the free jazz tradition, working variations on short rhythmic units into an endless flow of non-metered pulse.

soaked in jazzy late night grooves, blissed out piano chords and glistening beats, it’s another essential release from a label that’s quickly rising to prominence.
following on from the soul-drenched disco excursions of ross from friends’ debut ep, newcomer rgl’s ‘1 thing’ ep spans 3 dusty deep house cuts built from the ground up to do the dance-floor damage. rgl is the moniker of tokyo based producer rigly chang, who’s also part of the tokyo based cosmopolyphonic collective. his affinity for intimate dance music brings soft textures and moods that stretch into the listener, bringing a new kind of warmth to the club.

after mathematics, bio rhythm and la beauté du négatif, american artist deviere is back on parisian label unlearn. lobster theremin artist and unlearn affiliate royer is on remix duty. water drums (a1), a deep and spacey cut reminds a joey-anderson-esque imagery for a moody and introspective club experience. strong yet subtle in the low end, this one is for the big sound systems. royer’s demi-monde remix comes up as a more housy interpretation, mixing dubby inspirations with lo-fi aesthetics. reminiscent of kyle hall’s early works on moods and grooves, rising (b1) is an upfront dancefloor track suited for peak time euphoria. speak into existence (b2) is probably the most accessible track of the ep, oscillating between acid-yet-warm feelings and solemn preacher-preachin’ vibes.

we are seemingly headed towards dark and confusing times. the tension inside of the people is rising so instead of putting more gasoline to the fire and fueling the rage i submit to you these sounds of peace. not black music or white music. not borders or class. just music. it’s time to stop labeling music, just as it is time to stop labeling humans as 1st class and 2nd class citizens. if you can ignore my broken voice and if you could only look past my music’s imperfections, you would feel me instead of hearing me and maybe then you could get a small glimpse of the hope that the people feel when they are at my concerts and understand the idea that many great men and women before me like bob marley and john lennon had, that we are all one. the idea that had brought hope and countless others. the hope that makes them scream: peace forever. the maverick maestro from the bay dave aju is back with his circus family here with an incredible new release. based on stripped-down hardware sessions rocking just a roland tr-909 and sh-101, aju once again proves that no sound set need be limited in itself and along with the addition of one microphone for his inimitable soulful voice, creates one of his strongest and most imaginative releases to date, the 10101 ep. a multiple homage to the 101 freeway that spans his native golden state and the numeric classic analog boxes used vs digital binary to process them, the four rich tracks offer the best of both worlds and cover all the bases of mr ajus musical multiverse. low dive starts things on a deep heads-down dance floor tip where rising synth lines soar over a blast of shuffling drums and percussion for a rocksolid djs delight. always never comes next with pure aju magic, equal parts song and track, an ear worm of a chorus, and full of sunny west coast electro influences all the way through. on the flip sides may very well be one of ajus most intense transmissions ever, with a sublime and seemingly endless build-up of dark pads, driving, shifting rhythms, and voodoo vocals that will detonate many a peak-hour sound system guaranteed. aju then tastefully finishes with the cool psychedelic mid-tempo bump of tell her why which harks back to his hip-hop roots and wraps up the vibe and elements of the whole ep perfectly. welcome back with a bang brother aju!

after getting off to a strong start, resolute s disdat sublabel noticeably raises the bar with a heavy hitting cast for its second edition. thomas melchior takes a break from his usual haunts to drop a track brimming with micro house flair, as hillbilly high throws down an infectious run of goofy samples over a solid beat. vincent lemieux meanwhile takes a smoother route with the warm chord-laden atmosphere of in momos jeep, working crafty percussion impeccably in the deep surroundings. rising talent barac meanwhile gets fresh with the cheeky synth lines on his own offering, making this an ep of fresh variations on the minimal house sound.
